I never need an excuse to make something with my hands so I jumped at the chance to learn the ancient skill of basket weaving with my friend and colleague Ashley Scrase last weekend. We attended a class run by Julie Gurr (http://www.willowweaver.com/). I’ve been wanting to give this a go ever since a lecture from Lois Walpole (http://www.loiswalpole.com/) on the my Sequential Design MA at Brighton last year. Lois uses a lot of recycled materials in her work, which now makes a lot of sense as it seems there is a lot of planning involved in the obtaining and soaking the willow before you can get started. It is of course environmentally friendly too. Julie had a nice selection of willow available for our use however and the result was very authentic.
Weaving the ‘god’s eye’ that holds the handles in place was the biggest challenge, but the other skills were surprisingly easy to pick up and the overall result was very satisfying!
