BLOOMSBURY GROUP AT CHARLESTON INSPIRED PATTERN DESIGN – PART 4: The Class

What a wonderful day spent teaching pattern making at Charleston following my previous preparation.

I had a lovely class of students, all of whom made a least two printing blocks and took to it like ducks to water! We enjoyed a tour of the house, sketching and observing the wealth of patterns and designs that decorate almost every conceivable surface including fireplaces, furniture and crockery, then went back to the cosy studio to work on the designs.

Following delicious lunch we started to carve the designs out of lino and finally realised the designs on to paper and fabric. Once the first test prints had been made we refined them or added new emblems to help create a pattern. Here are some pictures from a very successful and enjoyable day:
